Reggie Sees 'Dead People'

If you're familiar with Sports Bloggers Live you've probably heard the infamous "What the [heck] is a blogger?" clip starring SBL fave Reggie Jackson. Well, Reggie was back on the program yesterday talking about himself and the Yankees when he took time out to comment on allegations that Gary Sheffield took performance enhancing drugs. Here's the partial transcription...

SBL Craig: "Hey Reggie, on Thursday the book Game of Shadows hit stores and now Sheffield has been accused by these two writers of taking steroids. What's the Yankees reaction to that and what are your thoughts on the scandal?"

Mr. October: "I really don't know what the reaction is going to be, but it's like dead fish or dead animals with buzzards hanging around it. It seems like the carcass seems to get larger and the birds keep circling more and you start to see the problems and the dead people from a distance now when you see them circling in the sky. It's now getting to the point to where it's obviously nationwide. The circle gets bigger. The vultures get larger. And then the dead things start smelling. So it's not pretty."

No, it's not pretty. And it's cut and dry, really. Players accused of taking steroids are the dead fish/animals/people. The media (and maybe fans as well) are the buzzards/vultures. The players are increasing in size and their collective aroma is unpleasant. The media are working faster and growing more substantial, and the more prevalent they become the more conspicuous the players are. And we just may have a widespread conspiracy on our hands. Oh, and Sheffield? The rest of the transcription follows the photo...

Mr. October: "You know, Gary Sheffield is a high quality guy. Stands behind his word. That's what I've seen when he's been here with the Yankees. But they just keep diggingand digging and digging. It starts to get embarrassing because of the disparaging remarks. For some reason it seems like if you throw enough mud up against the wall, no matter how much you wipe it off you can still see the stains."

That started off as plausible deniability and devolved into a description of game-worn BVDs. I think.

Mr. October: "So that's what I'm starting to feel now. I'm starting to get sensitive about it myself. I really don't like the leaking of data and information without some kind of legal right to go in and pursue all this information that's been gathered. There's too much hearsay. There's too many undisclosed, anonymous comments and at the same time when there are names exposed you just kind of wonder who's behind it all. It's ugly, and I really think it's only going to continue to get worse."

Now I'm starting to feel Reggie. Not so much that I agree with him (at all), but at least he's making sense. And yeah, I really think it's going to get worse too.

Hear Reggie on Sheffield.

Hear the full interview.

SBL Giveaway: Email me at dcsportsguy@aol.com with 'Reggie' in the subject line to enter into the random drawing for a Reggie Jackson autographed baseball and email me with 'Hit-A-Way' in the subject line to enter into the randomness for a Reggie Hit-A-Way. We love Reggie.

Woohoo! It's TGIDCF! And I have outdone myself here. I mean really. My skills are off the hook. I don't understand why WNYC hasn't knocked down my door to start my very own program. (He's okay now, thank you.)

Listen today as Marc, Ronnie and Fausto chat about Beards making a fashion comeback, hot guys on our Frappr map, celebrities that will not die, and Texas cops arresting people in BARS for being drunk.

To make everyone feel better picture to the right is Scott Madsen the original Soloflex Poster boy who's ad campaign launched a whole new way of looking at the male body in advertising. He was the subject of many a gay teen fantasies (he certainly was mine.)

We don't make this stuff up... well at least most of it.

The Feast of Fools is coming to NYC! Thursday April 13th 7pm at the Starlight Lounge in the Village, NYC. Chip any amount of money you have in your coin jar by clicking here. Help bring Ms. V-Marr, Ronnie, Amanda, Marc and your flaming blue pal Fausto to the Big Apple to meet you face to face. We've raised $672 dollars so far!
Portals Or Bloatals?

Another week, another Podsession. This week, Niall and I ask the dreaded question: Are portals back in fashion? After all, despite what you may say, the launch of Google Finance, is the latest of many steps the search company has taken towards a full blown portal.

Niall liked the new Google Finance, especially the chart overlays and integration with other Google products. I found the new product lacking a few of my favorite features from Yahoo! Finance such as institutional holdings and insider trading. But also listen to why I was so negative on the GFinance.

A search company executive recently told Niall that Google averages 15 searches per user per month. A search engine can focus on growing its user base of searchers or increasing the number of searchers per user. The introduction of auxiliary features such as Google Finance add new launchpads of search activity across Google properties that results in highly targeted and high-revenue advertising.

Meanwhile, the new kids on the block, folks like Netvibes, (which received $1 million in funding this week) are turning the portal concept on its head. I would say, this week’s PodSession, is lively, and combative. The podcast is 19 minutes long, a 9 MB download.
